The Food and Beverages Association of Ghana (FABAG) has disputed Tema Port management's claims that operational challenges have been resolved. The organisation contends that bulk cargo operations have reached their lowest performance levels in over two decades.
According to FABAG, cargo discharge rates at the bulk and bagged cargo section have collapsed dramatically, dropping approximately 90% from historical averages of 2,000 metric tonnes daily to roughly 200 metric tonnes.
The association attributes continued problems to staffing shortages, low employee morale, and unresolved labour issues, arguing that a newly implemented 24-hour shift system has failed to improve productivity. FABAG reports that extended vessel berthing times and slow cargo handling have significantly increased demurrage and logistics expenses throughout supply chains.
